Shadow Play Animation

The subject matter stemmed from students reactions and interpretations of the imagery found in Francisco Goya’s series of paintings known as the “Black Paintings”.  The imagery depicts faces distorted with fear; students used this to inform their narratives. Students worked collaboratively to create a narrative based on the scenes depicted in the paintings, focusing on developing an unknown terror that could cause the faces of fear. Folklore and mythical creatures were referenced to engage student’s imaginations during the process and the school woodland surroundings acted as a setting. Students experimented with elements of light and shadow silhouettes, using photography and drawing to create a short animation to represent their tale.
